Abstract
The rich knowledge systems of indigenous peoples (Ips) can be tapped to provide solution to many adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change (CC), hence this project that aims to document and communicate the indigenous knowledge (IK) for climate change adaptation (CCA) of selected IPs in the Philippines. The key informants/primary sources of information were the Ivatan of Batanes; Sulodnon and Ati of Iloilo; Tagbanua of Palawan; Waray of Leyte; and Matigsalug-Manobo, Bagobo-Klata and Bagobo-Tagabawa of Davao.

The adaptive capacities and practices of the IPs in response to CC are to ensure the stability of supply, accessibility and availablity of food and income sources throughoiut the year. To achieve this, they practice biodiversity-based farming systems; changed their cropping (and fishing) calendar; plant typhoon- and drought-resilient crops; practice progressive harvesting; and plant and consume lesser-known indigenous food crops. They also use local knowledge of stars and constellations, and other climate-hazard indicators and warning systems in deciding what and when to plant and harvest specific crops. They also have unique food preservation systems to ensure food supply during times when food is scarce.

It is important to come up with favorable policies and programs at the local and national levels to support IPs by engaging them in planning and advisory councils on CCA and mitigation and disaster risk reduction. In the long term, IK systems could be incorporated in the curricula at the elementary and high school levels, or incorporated in existing courses such as science and social studies.
